This is why the symbol of Trinacria represents Sicily. In the Sicilian flag stands the symbol of a female head with three legs bent (Triscele) and moved directly from the head. In heraldry this representation is called trinacria.
The head clearly refers to the gorgons, monsters of Greek mythology of monstrous appearance, gold wings, hands with bronze claws, boar tusks and snakes in place of hair. They were three and represented perversions: Euriale represented sexual perversion, Steno the moral perversion and Medusa (the most famous, the only mortal among the three and guardian of the Underworld) intellectual perversion.
In ancient times the name of Sicily was that of Triquetra or Trinacria. This is because, unlike the classic round shape of all the other islands, Sicily has a strange geographical configuration. It is characterized by three headlands, Pachino, Peloro and Lilibeo and three vertices that almost instinctively refer to the triangle.
And it is probably in the Hellenistic period that the Greek culture, full of gods, demigods and mythological monsters, coined the symbol of the gorgon with three legs attached directly to the head, associating it slowly to our earth and the mysteries that enveloped it
But where does this symbol come from? Have there ever been similar to you in human history?
In this the scholars agree in reiterating that the trinacria is an ancient oriental religious symbol that represented the god of the sun in its triple form of spring, summer and winter.
It was only in Roman times that the trinacria lost its intrinsic religious meaning to become exclusively the geographical symbol of Sicily.
But why was the head of a gorgon used?
The question that some of you might ask yourself is: why, if the religious meaning of the trinacria was no longer there, we continued to use a mystical image like that of the gorgon?
The gorgon, my friends, is a typically Sicilian detail.
In all other representations, the legs were tied together through a circle or a point.
And the “Trichetria” is strongly linked to Eastern Greek mythology. Our ancestors used to decorate temples, vases and houses with masks and picturesque depictions to ward off, remove or cancel evil influences. Just like the gesture of the horns we use to exorcise evil.
For the Sicilian doc, religious and superstitious by family tradition, the trinacria is a lucky charm talisman.
