Have you ever wondered why so many villages in the province of Catania all start with the same name, Aci? Aci Castello, Aci Trezza Acireale, Aci Catena, Aci San Filippo, Aci Platani, Aci Santa Lucia, Aci Bonaccorsi ed Aci Sant’Antonio.
Galeotta was a beautiful love story between a little shepherd named Aci and a nymph named Galatea.
The legends closely linked to the majestic Etna are many and its beauty has inspired poets and storytellers. This legend is among the most beautiful love stories of mythology, a legend that Ovid tells in the XIII book of Metamorphoses.
The legend tells of Polyphemus, cyclops who lived in the volcano, hopelessly in love with the young Galatea. The beautiful nymph was one of the fifty nymphs of the sea, the Nereids, daughters of the sea gods Doride and Nereo.
Aci was a beautiful little shepherd, son of Faunus, who grazed his sheep near the sea, when he saw Galatea one day and fell madly in love with him; love was obviously reciprocated by the nymph. Aci and Galatea were very much in love and Polifemo’s advances towards the nymph were therefore useless.
One evening, in the moonlight, the Cyclops saw the two lovers on the seashore kissing. Blinded by jealousy, he decided to take revenge. As soon as Galatea dived into the sea, Polyphemus took a large mass of lava and hurled it at the poor little shepherd crushing it. As soon as Galatea heard of the terrible news, he immediately rushed over and cried all his tears over the battered body of Acis. Jupiter and the gods took pity and transformed the shepherd’s blood into a small river that originates from Etna and flows into the stretch of beach just where the two lovers used to meet.
The small river was called by the ancient Greeks “Akis” and, in Capo Molini (not far from the sea) there is a small spring called “u sangu di Jaci”, due to its reddish color. Thus the river gave its name to the nine towns; Aci Castello, whose name derives from the homonymous castle of the Norman era, built on a promontory of volcanic rock overlooking the sea, now home to the civic museum. Aci Trezza, a small and charming fishing village where the stacks of the Cyclops emerge from its clear waters, souvenirs of the ire of the latter and the island Lachea. But Aci Trezza is famous above all for the book by Giovanni Verga, “I Malavoglia” and it is here that Luchino Visconti shot his film “La terra trema”, inspired by the book of the Sicilian writer. Other cities Acireale, Aci Catena, Aci San Filippo, Aci Platani, Aci Santa Lucia, Aci Bonaccorsi ed Aci Sant’Antonio.
The popular legend also narrates that the body of the poor shepherd boy was dismembered into nine parts then fallen where the nine Aces were born. Thus the imagination of man wanted to explain the presence of this source of fresh water that flows near the sea.
We like to believe that this sweet, but unfortunately tragic love story still continues in the blue Ionian sea, where the beloved Galatea awaits the river Aci, where Polyphemus can do nothing.
